Serengeti National Park is undoubtedly the
best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world,
unequalled for its natural beauty and scientific
value. With more than two million wildebeest, half a
million Thomson's gazelle, and a quarter of a
million zebra, it has the greatest concentration of
plains game in Africa. The wildebeest and zebra
moreover form the star cast of a unique spectacular
- the annual Serengeti migration.
A unique combination of diverse habitats enables it
to support more than 30 species of large harbivores
and over 400 species of birds
Day 4: Ngorongoro conservation area
Breakfast at leisure then view game as you drive to
Ngorongoro conservation area for overnight stay at
Ngorongoro Simba campsite
The park is one of the most densely crowded wildlife
areas in the world and is home to an estimated
30,000 animals. There are no giraffe, topi or impala
in the park - they probably find it to difficult to
negotiate the crater rim cliffs and there is also
insufficient grazing for large herds of antelope,
inside the park. However the park teems with
wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, aggressive pack hunting
hyenas and resident lion prides. Supported by a year
round supply of water and fodder, the park supports
a vast variety of animals, which include impressive
herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog,
hippo, giant elephants and a small population of
black rhino. Another big draw to this picturesque
park is it dense population of predators, which
include lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the
ever elusive leopard. Over 500 species of bird have
been recorded within the NCA. These include ostrich,
white pelican, and greater and lesser flamingo on
Lake Magadi within the crater, Lake Ndutu, and in
the Empakaai Crater Lake, where a vast bird
population can be observed.
Day 5 Ngorongoro crater - Tarangire National park
After breakfast drive to Tarangire. Afternoon game
drive, meals and overnight at Campsite.
Zebra, wildebeest, cape buffalo, thomsons gazelle,
fringe eared oryx and hartebeest (also called
kongoni) can be seen in large numbers during the dry
season and many of these migrate out of the park
towards Lake Manyara and further north when the
short rains occur, usually in November. At this time
they move on to new areas of grassland. These herd
animals then return to the park after the long rains
in April and May. Species that remain in the park
include giraffe, waterbuck, impala, warthog, lesser
kudu, dik dik (a small type of antelope) elephants
can often be seen in small or large herds,
particularly in the dry season, and groups or pods
of hippo can be seen in the river and swamplands in
the centre of the park. Baboon and vervet monkeys
are the most commonly seen species of primates seen
in the park. The main predators in the park are,
lion, spotted hyena, cheetah, and leopard. Other
smaller predators include bat-eared foxes, jackal.
Other animals seen include bush and rock hyrax (also
called dassies) mongeese, ground squirrel, porcupine
(mainly nocturnal) and civet cat.
